Your First Plan

Start a plan, pick how to run the work, and share it.

This walk-through takes a few minutes and needs no account. By the end you will have a plan with a board of cards, a second tab beside it, and a link you can send to someone so you can plan together.

Open liveplanner

Open a new plan. There is no sign-up and nothing to install: you start straight away as a guest, and your work is saved in this browser as you go. You can sign in later to keep it on every device; see Guest vs Account.

A plan holds tabs, listed along the bottom of the screen. Each tab is one Board, Sheet, Form or Dashboard. Your new plan has one empty tab, so it opens on Start Planning.

Pick how to run the work

Start Planning lists ready-made starts down its left side: Recommended, Boards, Spreadsheets, Forms, Visualisations, Dashboards and Inspiration (whole ways of working set up across several tabs, such as a Hiring Pipeline or a Content Calendar). Or type in the search box to find a board, sheet, form or layout by name.

Under Recommended, pick Kanban. The tab becomes a board with the columns Backlog, To Do, In Progress, Review and Done, and limits on how many cards the busy columns should hold at once.

If liveplanner offers you the Boards tour, press Yes for a quick look round your board. It adds an example card to show you, and takes it away after.

The plan takes the board's name ("Untitled Kanban"). To call it something else, click the name at the top of the screen, type, and press Enter.

Add and move cards

A Kanban board: columns of cards, with a card being dragged into another column.
  • Add a card: press Add your first card (or Add card) at the top of a column, pick the kind of card, and type its title.
  • Open a card: click it to see its details: who it's assigned to, its priority, dates, a description and comments. Every change saves as you make it.
  • Move a card: drag it to another column as the work moves on, or up and down its column to put it in order. With the keyboard, focus a card and press Shift with the arrow keys.
  • Undo a slip: the Undo and Redo buttons sit in the bottom-right corner, or press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac).

The buttons beside them help as the board grows: New adds a card, Find finds any card in the plan, Types sets up the kinds of card you use and their fields, and Trash keeps what you delete until you restore it. More in Boards and Cards.

Add another tab

Press + at the end of the tab bar. The new tab opens on Start Planning too, so you can put something different beside your board:

  • A Sheet: under Spreadsheets, pick Empty Sheet for a blank grid with formulas, or a ready-made one such as a budget. See Sheets.
  • A Dashboard: under Dashboards, pick one such as Overview to see metrics and charts drawn from the plan's cards. Because every card lives in the plan, the dashboard keeps up as cards move on your board. See Dashboards.
  • A Form: under Forms, pick one such as Feedback. Each answer someone sends becomes a card. See Forms.

Click a tab to switch to it. Its ⋯ menu renames, duplicates, locks or deletes it; see Using Tabs.

Share it

Press Share at the top right.

Choose what the person can do: Editor (changes anything, with you), Participant (adds and moves cards and fills in cells, without changing how the plan is set up) or Viewer (looks only).

Press Create Pass. The link is copied for you: paste it into a message. Whoever opens it joins the same plan, with no account needed, and you see each other's changes as they happen.
